BESIDE at La Chapelle Scènes Contemporaines from October 15th to 18th

The piece BESIDE of maribé – sors de ce corps, in partnership with Montréal Danse, will be the subject of four performances at La Chapelle Scènes Contemporaines in Montréal, from October 15th to 18th, 2019 at 7 p.m.

How is the body support speeches constructed today ? Live radio as a vocal score becomes here a pretext to question the role of the body in this both political and social act that is to communicate to the greatest number of opinions and information. Does their abundance prevent us from understanding each other ?

October 16 at 6 pm – “Communication | (Re)Configurations” – talk in french
Speaker : Line Grenier
Participation. Transmission. Sharing. Dialogue. Exchange. Dissimination. What if communication was not only a matter of ideas to be expressed and information to be shared, agreements to be achieved and misunderstandings to be avoided ? What if medias were not only the institutions and businesses conveying them ?

October 17 at 6 pm – “Dancing Automata” – talk in english
Speaker : Hilary Bergen
The word “automaton,” which comes from the Greek term for “self-mover,” can mean both a machine capable of independent motion and a person incapable of independent action or thought. The conflict at the heart of this uncanny definition maps well onto binary tensions such as animacy/mimesis, freedom/control, order/chaos and slavery/revolt. This talk examines the role of dance—in which the body is both a “self-mover” and an entity mechanized through repetition—in relation to histories and theories of automation, with special attention paid to choreographies of work and mediation.

Part of a trilogy alongside BEHIND (2010) and BETWEEN (2015), BESIDE is a collaboration between companies maribé – sors de ce corps and Montréal Danse, and their respective Artistic Directors, Marie Béland, choreographer and Kathy Casey, dramaturge.
