MANDATES AND VALUES
Since 2005, MARIBÉ – SORS DE CE CORPS has as its mandate the creation and circulation of the projects designed by Marie Béland. It conveys the following values:
• Sustainability: in response to burnout and precariousness, support over time the artists and collaborators who work in the organization: be faithful to the teams, honor the invisible work, get out of the imperatives of novelty, extend the life of the works (reassembly/recreations, satellite projects, etc.), have a long-term vision.
• Uncompromising accessibility: how can the artistic approach reach the spectators, while valuing the intellectual and conceptual complexity at the heart of the approach? To work around the works to accompany the spectators.
• Feminism: establish a board of directors based on sorority. Recognize, participate in the empowerment and the fulfillment of women in the company.
• Spirit of collaboration and friendship: Establish healthy conditions and respect for all. Marie seeks a friendly context to facilitate collaboration with interpreters, collaborators, etc. She uses time to develop and cherish professional friendships.
• Mutualisation: fostering consistent sharing of hearts, which are not just responses to a state of crisis. Make the mutualisation of resources an environmental issue, not a financial response. Recognize and value sharing as a mechanism that generates few savings, but mutual aid and an understanding of the realities of each.
• Healthy responsibility: consider eco-responsibility, reconciliation with First Nations and supporting minorities one step at a time, ensuring resources are in place, and avoiding tokenism or generating guilt and anxiety.
ARTISTIC APPROACH
The company bases its activities on creations that explore how our bodies transform themselves in contact with the stage, whether or not they submit to its codes and conventions. Through a work on presence and performance, Marie Béland thinks, with the active contribution of the performers, on the impact on the viewer of an image of the body oscillating between the daily body, the «ordinary» movement, and its transformation into a living work of art. Drawing from our different uses of the body and the gestures that make up our daily lives, Marie organizes banal movement to make it danceable and complex. The scene then acts as a revealer of these troubled zones, playing with the true, the false and the plausible. Her creations approach live performance as a social and aesthetic phenomenon, an opportunity to study the transformations that our ordinary bodies undergo in contact with the stage.
The stage is used as a platform from which the performers address themselves directly to the spectator. The result are playful works that highlight the codes of representation to better reveal them, but above all that, become a mirror of our social codes and the way in which our relations with the Other are organized. Questioning the being-in-scene becomes a way of inviting the spectator to question his own ways of being on a daily basis. Each work has a finely crafted choreographic score that values the complexity of the content and its purpose. The result is shows that have the power to reach the general public as the most neophytes, often teenagers. In addition, the company has demonstrated local and international outreach through the development of a network of diverse partners: specialized theatres, multidisciplinary, youth broadcasters, festivals, etc.
HISTORIC OF THE COMPANY
Founded in 2005, the company began its activities with maribé – live in Montréal (2005) created following a summer residency at Studio 303, followed by a work for teenagers Twis-manivelle (2005), which was chosen by the newspaper ICI as one of the five best works of the year. Subsequent piece was Dieu ne t’a pas créé juste pour danser (2008-2018) which received the prize ARRIMAGES during its tour of the Maisons de la culture of Montréal and which was completely revamped in 2018 to be toured again; RAYON X : a true decoy story (2010) co-presented by Tangente and le Festival Les Coups de Théâtre which has been seen on nearly 25 times in Québec; BEHIND : une danse dont vous êtes le héros (2010) which was performed at Tangente, FTA, at Festival ArtDanThé in Vanves (France) then at Agora de la danse; Vie et mort de l’élégance (2012) that won the silver medal at the Jeux de la Francophonie 2013 (FR); BLEU – VERT – ROUGE (2013), presented at Agora de la danse; Révélations (2014), first presented in Spain and then at Tangente in Montréal in its final version; Persona (2015) created for EDCM graduates and presented in Ivory Coast during the Jeux de la Francophonie 2017, and finally BETWEEN (2015), presented in double bill with BEHIND : une danse dont vous êtes le héros at Festival ArtDanThé (FR), at Theatre 140 (BEL) at Agora de la danse and at the Festival Sounded Bodies in Zagreb (CRO). Marie finalizes BESIDE in 2019 which closes the B+B+B trilogy, still in partnership with Montréal Danse, and which has been presented in France, England and Canada. In 2021, she works on an interactive digital installation related to BESIDE, and launches Season 1 of the podcast Déplacements sonores, a sound work for and through dance made in tandem with Anne Thériault. Since her beginnings, she has carried out several residencies in Quebec and abroad (La Rotonde Québec, TanzWerkstatt Berlin, La Caldera Barcelone, Dance 4 center for choreography Nottingham, Cardiff Dance Festival, Centro per la Scena Comtemporanea Bassano del Grappa).
Marie Béland and MARIBÉ – SORS DE CE CORPS receives recurrent and/or punctual support from the three Conseil of the Arts for the research, production, diffusion and tour. Several times, the organization has benefited from residency support from the dance milieu, whether from Agora de la danse, Place des Arts, the Maisons de la culture of Montréal, the FLAK company or the dance department at UQÀM. The company is invested in resource sharing by being a member of Circuit-Est centre chorégraphique since 2009 and of Art Circulation since 2013. Highlight: in 2015 the company launches its brand new visual including a new signature and a new website.
