Two dance creators, Marie Béland and Anne Thériault, invite nine artists to come, discuss and reflect while experimenting performative paths conceived as choreographic walks. Somewhere between reflections, experiments, encounters, discussions, funny moments, meals, detour and movements weaves a soundscape around and about what is sometimes called dance.

Project history

Marie Béland and Anne Thériault have been in artistic dialogue on several levels since 2005.

This podcast project is a continuation of a research they began in 2017, when they united around their interest in the physicality of words, and the body of a text. In 2018, the search forked towards the question of the multiple traces that dance leaves or what disappears. From this research, the performance of De et avec… was born, through which they became interested in the archives of the places of the living arts diffusion since their foundation, and especially of what remains of the shows in the form of written traces that are the seasonal programs.

In times of pandemic, they decide to open up their practice and find a way to connect verbal language and dance in a form of sound. Marie Béland infuses the idea of designing a podcast series. They unite around the practice of Parcours Doux initiated by Anne Thériault, and develop a new hybrid artistic project. Wishing to make new encounters and open reflexive dialogues, they launch a call for applications to finally draw lots six artists who are invited to take part in the experience.

This is how the project slowly and significantly develops. Dimitri Haddad, the project’s photographer, then tells us his terrible journey between the explosion in Lebanon and the arrival in Canada, and his story is the main thread of the episodes.

RECréation accompanies the project, which is directed by Francis Thibault. The composer and musician Virginie Reid is invited to design, together with Anne Thériault, the musical identity of the episodes.

The tours take place in three distinct neighbourhoods of Montréal/Tiohtià:ke/Mooniyang, an unceded Indigenous territory.

Biographies

Anne Thériault

A singular creator and performer, Anne Thériault has been weaving collaborations with artists from multiple backgrounds for more than ten years: with composer Martin Messier, she co-created Derrière le rideau, il fait peut-être nuit (FTA 2011) and Con grazia (FTA 2016) ; the performance Doux  (Actoral 2016) with visual artist Julie Favreau, and with the company BOP, Quatuor pour la fin du temps (OFFTA 2017) alongside Karina Champoux, Frédéric Tavernini and Dave St-Pierre. In particular, she approached the theatre on the occasion of Ainsi parlait… by Frédérick Gravel & Étienne Lepage, and La Fureur de ce que je pense by Marie Brassard. She is a founding member of Lorganisme, a structure for choreographers. She is also an associate artist at Usine C, where she recently presented her latest opus: Récital (FTA 2018). Currently, Anne Thériault is working on new research projects, collaborating with several artists as an artistic advisor and is invited to curate the COMPAGNONNAGE 21 event by Danièle Desnoyers/Le Carré des Lombes, which takes place in winter 2021. The artist is invited for a period of 3 years, as a researcher at L’L, an experimental research structure in the living arts, located in Brussels.

bernard martin
Bernard Martin / Interprète collaborateur

Since 1979, Bernard Martin mixes types and styles, oscillating between ballet-jazz, classical and contemporary dance. He began his professional career in 1991. Since then, he has visited a wide range of companies and collaborated with several choreographers: Les Grands Ballets Canadiens (Nacho Duato, Ohad Naharin, Jiry Kilian, Mark Morris, Georges Balanchine, Fernand Nault and more), Montréal Danse (Jose Navas, Paula de Vasconcelos, Marie Béland and more) , La Fondation Jean-Pierre Perreault, Système D/Dominique Porte, La La La Human Steps (Édouard Lock), Le Carré des Lombes (Danièle Desnoyers), Louise Bédard Danse, Creations Estelle Clareton and Susanna Hood. Since 2009, Bernard Martin has been teaching ballet for contemporary dancers and performing at the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal. Finally, Bernard Martin was a member of the company La La La Human Steps, directed by Édouard Lock, from 2001 to 2009, with which he performed on the stages of the world’s major cultural capitals. He played prominent roles in AMJAD, AMÉLIA – ballet and film – as well as in LES BORÉADES, an opera by Jean-Philippe Rameau, choreographed by Édouard Lock and presented at the Opéra de Paris. More recently, Bernard Martin participated in the last creation of Danièle Desnoyers, DÉVORER LE CIEL.

Karen Fennell

Karen Fennell is a contemporary dance artist from Newfoundland who has been based in Montreal since 2004. As a performer and choreographer, she works on a variety of projects for the stage, video, installation and in situ performance. She has participated in the work of choreographers Martin Messier, Tedd Robinson, Dana Gingras, Sasha Kleinplatz, and Maria Kefirova (among others), and frequently collaborates with visual artists and musicians, including Chloe Lum and Yannick Desranleau, Jackie Gallant, and Sarah Wendt and Pascal Dufaux. Karen is currently developing her first solo work, which will be presented in Montreal and elsewhere in Canada between 2021 and 2023.

Emmanuelle Martin

With a baccalaureate in dance, Emmanuelle studied in France, the United States and Canada. She worked with artists such as Bruno Guillore (Hofesh Shechter), Rudy Bryans (Opéra de Marseille), Linda-Denise Fisher-Harrell (Alvin Ailey), Tom Weinberger (Batsheva) and Victor Quijada (RUBBERBAND). Specialized in contemporary and urban dance, Emmanuelle performs on four continents (Asia, Europe, North America, Latin America) and is associated with the works of Eva Kolarova, Kim-Sanh Châu, Johanne Gour, Sébastien Cliche, Céline Dion, without forgetting Les dix commandements, Imprudanses, Ampleman Danse, Valetto Dance Company, PPS Danse, Saxon Fraser or the Opéra de Québec… In 2017-2018, she joined P7:1SMA and Maya Dance Theatre, Singaporean companies with which she will explore traditional dances from Southeast Asia. Currently, she works for Trip the Light Fantastic, Bouge de là, Van Grimde Corps Secrets, maribé – sors de ce corps, Audrey Gaussiran, Bettina Hoffmann and Sinha Danse. She also choreographed in various projects, including her solo Encounter and the trio Chimion, both presented at the Quartier Danses Festival in September 2021.

Philippe Dépelteau

Based in Montreal/ Tio’tia:ke (Québec, Canada), Philippe works as a dancer and collaborator in the performing arts. Inhabited by a skilful and pure gesture, he communicates a dance both sensitive and thoughtful. Since 2019, he has been developing an ecological performative approach with Lauranne Heulot, thanks to the Ni d’Ève and Adam project. In parallel to his research, he collaborates with PPS Danse as an interpreter. As the concepts take shape, his artistic practice is a meeting place, a way to create a bond, all in poetry.

Liane Thériault

After studying film (Université de Montréal, 2008) and contemporary dance (UQAM, 2012), Liane Thériault embodied several postures as an artist in contemporary dance. First of all as an interpreter, she also worked on creation, directing rehearsals, teaching, video, and more recently, training dancers. As an interpreter, she collaborated, among others, with Les Soeurs Schmutt, Les Archipels (Philippe Meunier and Ian Yaworski), Liliane Moussa, Anne-Flore de Rochambeau, Foolish Operations Society (Julie Lebel, Vancouver), Tuque et capuche (Delphine Véronneau) and Claudia Chan Tak. His creations have been presented in Montreal since 2015 (Person (one) – Festival Bouge d’ici 2015, Somebody – Festival Vue sur la Relève 2015, Mine de rien – OFFTA 2015). Liane has been working on a solo creation project since 2018, with a regional audience development component. Since 2013, she has been a member of the company Dans son salon, first as a videographer, then as director of rehearsals and performer.

Olivier Rousseau

Olivier Rousseau is graduated of the École de théâtre de St-Hyacinthe and the dance department of UQAM. Since graduation, he has had the opportunity to perform in the creations of Estelle Clareton, Christophe Garcia, Les Archipels (Philippe Meunier and Ian Yaworski), Lucie Vigneault and several others. Soon, he will continue the creation of Duos en morceaux from the INK Theatre in which he rubs shoulders with the fantastic creators Marilyn Perreault, Annie Ranger, Marie Béland, Anne Thériault and Alix Dufresne. With a path that mixes theatre and dance, it offers a different approach to movement and embodies dance in a sensitive way. Olivier is a performer, creator, actor and we can see him from winter 2022 in the new series Love & Lajoie on TFO.

Dimitri Haddad

Dimitri Haddad is a multidisciplinary artist of Lebanese origin. Recently arrived in Montreal, he used his acquired skills to orient himself towards communication and production in the dance milieu.

Francis Thibault

Francis Thibault is a director for the podcast studio for which he directed the children’s series Bododo (Ohdio). He also directed the youth fiction Le facteur de l’espace (La Puce à l’oreille) based on the comic strip of the same name (La Pastèque). Francis is a sound goldsmith who combines scriptwriting and sound design to create immersive podcasts where audio is at the service of storytelling.

Virginie Reid

Virginie Reid is a pianist, keyboardist and composer living in Montréal. Her creations reveal a sensitive universe of both touching and powerful depth. Working on an interdisciplinary approach, she works regularly with artists from the fields of contemporary dance, theatre, visual arts and film. At the same time, the various musical projects in which she participates often lead her to perform internationally.
